Schools in the US are now buying more Chromebooks than all other devices combined - and in Q1 of this year, Chromebooks topped Macs in overall shipments to become the #2 most popular PC operating system in the US*. Virus protection and automatic updates are built-in, so you don't have to manage your computer. Chromebooks just work - open the lid, and within seconds, you’re on your favorite sites and apps, getting stuff done. PPAPI, an implementation of Native Client intended to make sandboxed browser plugins with, was only ever used for the Chrome implementation of Adobe Flash Player.We launched Chromebooks for people who wanted a fast, simple and secure computing experience. While it was used for a few high-profile applications, like the original web-based Google Earth, it never caught on as a browser standard, and was eventually superseded by WebAssembly. Google once positioned NaCl/PNaCl (also known as Google Native Client) as a way to run machine-executable code in a browser sandbox. Perhaps the most interesting part of the timeline is the end-of-life date for the NaCl, PNaCl, and PPAPI APIs.

June 2022: End support for Chrome Apps on Chrome OS for all customers.
